Aim
The course will provide the theoretical and methodological framework for the design tasks in the design course Dwelling and Space. Through texts, lectures and studies of described and visited reference projects, the course supports the student's exploratory and reflective work in relation to design assignments.
The course will also provide a prerequisite for subject knowledge development as support for assignments in terms of sustainability aspects, historical development of dwelling and housing types, housing policy, social aspects and theory about housing qualities. As the course is based on future-related issues, it also contains seminars to stimulate a reflective discussion.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- demonstrate knowledge and insight into current theories and accepted methods for analysis of housing in a context
- show insight into the impact of housing design on people's well-being and a responsible approach to the professional role
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- demonstrate the ability to describe, interpret and discuss theoretical points of departure, goals, means and concepts in the field of architectural design,
- demonstrate the ability to carry out analyzes of residential architecture with regard to structural and socio-economic aspects, dimensions, use, experiential values and other contexts.
- demonstrate the ability to formulate strategies for sustainable housing architecture based on in-depth analysis.
- demonstrate the ability to carry out in-depth analyzes of buildings with regard to their structural and design-related properties in relation to humans and society,
- demonstrate the ability to communicate theoretical content in words and pictures.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- show a critical, independent and creative approach to residential architecture
- demonstrate the ability to evaluate concepts and results from a human perspective
- demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate one's own design work

Examination details
Grading scale: UG - (U, G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Approved exercises and 80% attendance at study visits and lectures. Mandatory attendance at seminars. If the grade fails, the student is entitled to a re-examination after completion. The examiner informs the student what is required to obtain the grade passed.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
