Aim

The course use critical theoretical perspectives on architecture and urban development with the purpose of understanding theoretical themes and concepts as points of departure for critical reflection, and as tools for creating architecture. The course aims to give insight into how perspectives mainly from social sciences and humanities may inform and guide architectural design thinking and practice on various scales and cultural perspectives. An additional aim is to discuss how theories may function as working concepts that are unfixed and possible to adapt to multiple contexts and work processes.

Contents

The course introduces theoretical tools to deepen a critical reflection of design and its effects. This is carried out by relating theory and architectural discourse to one's own ongoing design project. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, literature studies and a written assignment. Teaching takes place in groups, but individual exercises may occur.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Accepted assignments and 80% attendance at field trips and lectures. Mandatory attendance at seminars. At the grade the student has the right to re-examination after completion. Examiner informs the student what is required to achieve a pass.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Admission

Admission requirements:

The number of participants is limited to: 36
Selection: Completed university credits within the program. Within programmes where the course is given as a mandatory or elective mandatory course students are guaranteed admission. There after priority is given to students enrolled in programmes that include the course in the curriculum.
