Mandatory for: MARK1
Elective for: A4
Language of instruction: The course will be given in English

Aim

The course is designed to support the student’s ability to design a building or buildings in a foreign and complex physical context. The student will develop their competence and deepen their knowledge within the core areas of architecture by integrating external factors—such as the characteristics of the site—with the primary function of the building. In an unfamiliar context, the student will also acquire knowledge about a building’s inherent physical conditions, including sustainability, construction, and materials. The course aims to provide insights into a culturally different paradigm within the field of architecture, and how such a paradigm can be applied and further developed in a changing society. The student will also have the opportunity to strengthen their ability to communicate their project in an international context, both visually and verbally.

Contents

The course’s applied assignment will be based on a context that is established but less familiar to the student. By introducing a working method that can be described as cyclical, the hypotheses formulated at each stage will be continuously evaluated, generating new perspectives that are carried forward in the design process. Artistic approaches will be set against locally established or scientifically grounded knowledge. The spatial program of the building may either be predetermined or developed as part of the design work. The purpose of the building may be of either a public or private nature. Collaboration with local stakeholders—whether official or independent—is prioritized but not required. Supervision is provided regarding the practical application of architectural knowledge in the design of building(s), as well as the communication of the achieved results. Teaching is conducted through individual or group-based exercises and activities. The course includes lectures and mandatory scheduled critiques (so-called “reviews”), as well as project supervision in the design studio. A 7.5-credit course is linked to this one, which includes literature studies, seminars, an optional study trip, and specialized knowledge related to the structural design of buildings.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U, G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Approved assignment tasks, approved examination project and and at least 80% active attendance at seminars, visits and lectures. Compulsory attendance at reviews. The qualities of the project assignment and presentation are evaluated and dicussed by an examination team comprised of the course examiner, lecturers and external critics after which the examiner decides if the project is considered to fulfil the requirements for a pass. In the case of non-pass the student has the right to a new examination opportunity after any necessary amendment or re-formulation of the project. The examiner informs the student as to what is required in order to achieve a pass.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
