Aim

The course is intended to support the student's ability to design a building or buildings within a well-known and established physical context. The student shall develop their competence and knowledge within the core areas of architecture by balancing external conditions—such as the characteristics of the site—with the building's primary function. The student will also acquire knowledge about a building's inherent physical conditions in terms of sustainability, construction, and materials. The course aims to provide the student with insights into how current paradigms within the field of architecture can be applied and further developed in a changing society. The student will also be given the opportunity to develop their ability to communicate their project in various forms, both visual and verbal.the prevailing paradigm in the field of architecture by new future aspects.

Contents

The course’s applied design assignment will be based on the established dense urban environment. By introducing a working method that can be described as cyclical, the hypotheses formulated at each stage will be continuously evaluated, generating new perspectives that are carried forward in the design process. Artistic approaches will be contrasted with established or scientifically grounded knowledge.

The building’s spatial program may either be predetermined or developed as part of the design work. The purpose of the building may be of either a public or private nature. Collaboration with local stakeholders—whether official or independent—is prioritized but not required.

Supervision will be provided regarding the practical application of architectural knowledge in the design of building(s), as well as in the communication of the achieved results. Teaching is conducted through individual or group exercises and assignments. The course includes lectures and mandatory scheduled reviews (referred to as “critiques”), along with project supervision in the design studio. A 7.5-credit course is connected to this one, including literature studies, seminars, a possible (non-compulsory) study trip, and specific instruction concerning the structural design of buildings.
