The aim of the course is to give an introduction to issues and problem areas encompassed by the Computer Science and Engineering program and to make it possible for students to understand how courses in the curriculum are connected. The course is also intended to introduce some of the different teaching and learning practices used in the program.

The course gives an overwiew of Computer Science and Engineering and introduces some fundamental concepts in this area e.g., the binary numeral system, representation of characters in computers, fundamental logics, formal languages and communication systems. It also gives the students insight of how knowledge from basic courses are used in more advanced courses. This is achieved by examples from compiler constructon techiques, automatic control, data communication, real time systems and robotics, computer graphics and image analysis.
Grading scale: UG
Assessment: Compulsory course items: exercise sessions, laboratory sessions, and a project work. There is also a number of compulsory lectures. A written examination after the first study period of the course. For a passing grade the students must have a passing grade on the written examination and must also have completed all compulsory course items.
