Aim

• to synthesize and deepen knowledge from previous courses in the processing field and give the student insights how it can be applied on industrial problems.
• to give the student experience in applied experimental planning, experimental work on processing equipment in pilot scale and validate experimental results, with the purpose of solving industrial problems using a theoretical approach.
• to train the student in project work, written as well as oral reporting.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to formulate mass and energy balances in the form of differential equations derived from transport phenomena taking place in studied unit operations, and solving them using mathematical tools.
• have a basic knowledge in some unit operations important to the biotech and food industry.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to plan and perform experimental work in pilot scale.
• have the capability to use mathematical and experimental methods to solve technical problems of relevant unit operations.
• apply project team work for solving engineering problems of unit operations.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to validate experimental results in relation to computed as expected from theory.
• be able to apply mathematical and experimental methods for solving complex technical problems
• be able to present, discuss and assess results in written form as well as oral to an audience of peers

Contents

This course is run mainly as a project laboratory work and in the form of a project (a process engineering assignment) that will be carried out by a project group. It will train the ability to run a project and work in a group. The project work includes a literature survey, forming hypotheses for the phenomena taking place and that need to be solved, planning of required experiments, experimental work on the unit operation equipment in pilot scale, evaluating the experimental data and reporting. Within the project also includes a qualified theoretical/computational simulations part for the studied unit operation. Data for its assessment will be taken from the own experiments or from literature.

The course will mainly be in the form of a project performed by a self-steering project group. Each group will have an advisor.

Peer assessment is an integrated part of the project work.

An home assignment in the form of a computational task related to the performance of a unit operation is also included.
