Aim
- to lay the foundation for engineering computations
- to use numerical methods to analyze and study biotechnical
processes
- to visualize biotechnical production systems through
simulation
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to calculate mass flows and energy requirements for
simple biotechnological production systems
- be able to work out simple models of production systems and
choose suitable numerical methods to describe the biotechnical
process
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to draw simple flow schemes for biotechnological
processes
- have a basic knowledge and skills for computational methods to
be able to compute numerical solutions for problems in
biotechnolgy
- be able to use computers for calculations
- be able to report and evaluate computed numerical
solutions
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to simplify a described chemical reaction or
biotechnological production in mass- and energy balances
- be able to describe a biotechnical process in mathematical
terms
Contents
- energy- and mass balances for biotechnical processes
- computational methods: Matlab, numerical methods for linear
equation systems, curve fitting, non-linear equation systems and
differential equations
