Prerequisites: KKK070 Biotechnology, KAT090 Chemical Engineering- Transport Processes and KMB060 Microbiology. Recommended prerequisites: KAT031 Chemical Engineering- Separation Processes, KFK080 Thermodynamics, KBK011 Biochemistry, FMA410 Calculus in one variable, FMA420 Linear algebra and FMA430 Calculus in several variables. Assessment: Written and oral examinations, written reports and oral presentaions, hand-in assignments. Approved computer exercises. Written and oral report evaluations. The final grading will be based on the average of the different parts. Parts: 4.

Contents: The course will provide problem solving skills concerning reactor calculations for industrial processes. Furthermore, the course will provide an understanding of the interplay between reaction and mass transfer in chemical and biotechnical processes. Credits: 3. Grading scale: TH. Assessment: Written examination. Contents: Industrial microorganisms. Fermentation technology incl. raw materials and substrates, microbial kinetics, bioreactors, sterilization of liquids, gases and equipments, measurement and control. Survey of separation processes. .

Code: 0303. Name: Unit operations for the food and biotechnical industry.
Credits: 3. Grading scale: TH. Assessment: Written examination and computer assignments. Contents: Achieve knowledge and understanding of unit operations important for industrial production. Descriptions of their use, common equipment and computations to predict their performance. The complex physical properties of biological products and thermal unstable properties will be considered in the theoretical as well as the applied parts of the course. Credits: 4. Grading scale: TH. Assessment: Written reports and oral presentations. Written evaluations of the reports. Compulsory presence at all presentations and reporting meetings. Opposition at presentations. Contents: In this part a process technology case will be studied in the format of a project. It will give training in operating a project and in group work. The project work includes literature study, experimental planning, laboratory work to obtain data required to solve the issues of the case.
