Aim

The goal of this course is to enable participants to enhance and apply their understanding of the impacts of traffic in different subject areas, such as accessibility, transport equity, level of service, and travel behaviour, among others. By the end of the course, participants will be acquainted with a range of methods for analyzing the transport system, and understanding the critical role of accessibility in shaping these analyses. They will gain insights into the types of data and measurements appropriate for different types of analysis and develop an understanding of the interrelationships between methods, data, and policy considerations.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Develop knowledge of various methods for analyzing the transport system in different subject areas such as accessibility, transport equity, level of service and travel behaviour.
• Have knowledge and an in-depth and interdisciplinary understanding of the strengths and weaknesses associated with different analysis methods, particularly in addressing specific problem areas.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Develop the ability to identify data requirements for analyzing different aspects of the transport system and its social effects, and successfully carry out data collection accordingly.
• Acquire proficiency in using various methods to analyze the transport system with a critical evaluation of the reliability of the results obtained.
• Enhance the capacity to engage in discussions about the analysis of the transport system and its effects, effectively communicating ideas and insights.
• Master the skill of writing concise scientific reports based on exercises, conveying analytical findings accurately and succinctly.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Cultivate the ability to critically evaluate traffic engineering solutions from multiple perspectives, including their societal and environmental impacts.
• Encourage an approach that integrates technical solutions with societal needs, focusing on sustainable and equitable traffic management.
• Develop a comprehensive system view regarding the conditions in the traffic system, considering the needs and experiences of different groups of road users and different means of transport.
• Enhance the capacity to critically assess traffic investigations, evaluating the quality of collected data and the validity of the conclusions drawn from them.
• Acquire the skills to locate and analyze relevant data related to the different subject areas.
• Comprehend the connections between different methods used in analyzing the transport system and their relevance to the policy context.

Contents

The course focuses on concepts and measurements, different types of data, and methods and tools for analysing aspects such as accessibility, transport equity, level of service and travel behaviour. The course format will include lectures, reading assignments, practical exercises, and a home assignment, which involves creating a fictional master thesis proposal to analyze a transport system-related problem. The course ends with a written exam, and the teachers will provide formative and summative feedback throughout.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U, 3, 4, 5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment:

For a passing grade: approved written exam, approved exercises, approved project work, approved oral presentation and presence at the obligatory parts are needed. The grade is awarded on the basis of the written exam, the project work report and the other assignments.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
