The course will give the student insight and understanding of the requirements put on load-bearing elements. After completion of the course the student will be able to analyse and design basic structural elements and understand the function of a load-bearing elements in a building.

Design principles, partial coefficient methods, load configuration including fire, structural elements, stability of structural systems, steel structures, concrete structures and timber structures.
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: One written examination and design assignments.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Credits: 3. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Two written reports. Contents: Report 1: design of a bridge structure. Report 2: Design of structural system of a building (including drawings and explanations).
For written assignments, not only the correctness of calculations and results is assessed, but also the quality of the presentation, i.e. structure and descriptive texts of the report.

Further information: The first assignment is carried out in groups of maximum two persons and must be graded "pass" to receive final grade for the course. The second assignment is carried out in groups of maximum two persons. It includes design of a load bearing structure for a hall building, presented in a report and drawings. The assignment is graded and has to be finished and handed in to receive final grade for the course.
