Aim

The aim of the course it to provide knowledge and insights into the planning, implementation and control of an industrial development project in which the goal is design, production and testing of a functional technical solution (embodiment design/prototype).

Contents

The development project is implemented over an entire academic year, i.e. four terms. The work is carried out in a group of 3-5 engineering students. The development projects, predominantly accomplished in cooperation with industry, consist of the following stages: Concept Design, Embodiment/Detail Design and Prototype Design.

Before beginning the Embodiment Design, students attend two lectures that complement the previously presented theory in the Product Development and Design Methodology course, MMK040.

Concept Design – A conceptual product proposal, a concept solution, is developed based on a tangible need or given product task.

Embodiment / Detail Design – From the concept solution proposed in the preceding stage, a preliminary applied product is developed to the point of production. If possible, the embodiment design efforts are divided so that each group member individually implements a portion of the development work.

Prototype Design – The prototype is produced. It is then assembled by the group, which also carries out product testing. The results from the testing, including possible recommendations for further development of the product, are documented in a final report. The product and the development efforts in their entirety are presented at a project exhibit open to the public.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: The results obtained at each product development project stage are presented in a joint report by each project group. A total of three reports will be compiled during the project. These reports are graded by the department advisor, generally after consultation with the industrial representative. Each such report can receive a maximum of 20 points. If a report does not receive enough points to pass, the group can supplement and resubmit it. If the report passes the second time, it will only receive the minimum number of points required for a passing grade (10). For a passing final grade, all project reports must receive a passing grade. The final grade will be a whole number that is a tenth of the sum of all the points from the reports. Five, however, is the highest grade that will be granted.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Parts
Code: 0117. Name: Concept Design Project.
Credits: 5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Each student receives the same number of points as the project work. To pass, the project must receive between 10 and 20 points. Contents: Ongoing accounts, technological foundation, handed-in reports and presentation are assessed based on the engineering design model introduced in the Product Development and Design Methodology MMK040
Code: 0217. Name: Embodiment Design Project.
Credits: 5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Each student receives the same number of points as the project work. To pass, the project must receive between 10 and 20 points. Contents: The work in this stage of the development project begins with a lecture on engineering design methodology in which the model presented in the Product Development and Design Methodology MMK040 course is supplemented. Ongoing accounts, a complete description of the basis of the layout, detailed engineering design and choice of components, report/s and presentation are assessed on the basis of the given engineering design model.
Code: 0317. Name: Prototype Design Project.
Credits: 5. Grading scale: UG. Assessment: Exhibition material, organisation, structure and implementation of the public exhibit and presentation are assessed. Each student receives the same number of points as the project work. To pass, the project must receive between 10 and 20 points. Contents: Organisation, structure and implementation of the three assignments for each stage of the course as well as the conclusions from product testing are documented in a final report.
