Aim
The course contains the fundamentals of organic chemistry and
biomolecular structure.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- have knowledge of the common organic functional groups
- have knowledge of the hybridization of the carbon atom and its
relevance for the structure and reactivity of organic functional
groups including basic molecular orbital theory
- have knowledge of the basics of stereochemistry and its
application to organic molecules
- have knowledge of elementary reactions and their mechanism for
organic compounds including biomolecules and polymers
- have understanding of the factors that determine the structure
and the reactivity of organic compounds
- have knowledge of the structures of the most common polymers
and biomolecules
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to value the stability and reactivity of simple organic
molecules
- be able to estimate the acid-base properties of organic
molecules
- be able to describe an organic reaction with a reaction
formula and mechanisms
- be able to judge the risks at chemical laboratory work
- master elementary laboratory techniques
Contents
The structure and reactivity of organic compounds with emphasis
on an understanding of properties such as solubility, acid-base
properties and reactivity. Some fundamental reaction mechanisms
inluding those of relevance for biochemical processes and polymer
synthesis. The most common experimental techniques evaluation of
risk factors at laboratory work.
