Syllabus spring term 2007

CHEMISTRY – FROM GENERAL CHEMISTRY TO THE MOLECULES OF LIFETEK285
Kemi – från allmän kemi till livets molekyler

Credits: 8. Grading scale: TH. Compulsory for: N1. Course coordinator: Professor Åke Oskarsson, ake.oskarsson@inorg.lu.se, Professor Ulf Berg, ulf.berg@orgk1.lu.se, Kemiska institutionen. Assessment: Written examination and approved lab course. Parts: 2. Homepage: http://www.teknisknanovetenskap.lth.se.

Aim
Knowledge: The course provides the chemical basis for engineering studies in technical nanoscience i. e. the basic chemistry required to understand the structure and organization of functional materials, the molecules of life - their structure and function and their ability to self-assembly or to interact with functional materials.

Proficiency: The student should have an ability to read and evaluate chemical texts, to discuss and analyse basic principles and models in chemistry.

Contents
Qualitative treatment of chemical bonds, intra- and inter-molecular interactions and their effect on structures and state of aggregation. The solid state, crystals, basic crystal structures, close packings. The geometrical shape of molecules, directional forces. A brief introduction into spectroscopic methods applied in chemistry (Mass, UV-VIS, vibrational and NMR).Basic electrochemistry and chemical thermodynamics, reaction enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs free energy and its relation to the equilibrium concept. Basic treatment of acid-base equilibria and the pH concept. The coordination chemistry of the d-block elements, their electronic structure and its relation to magnetic properties and colour. Basic organic chemistry and stereo-chemistry - the important classes of organic compounds, their structure, reactivity and reaction mechanisms. The molecules of life: amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and nucleic acids, DNA/RNA.
