Depth of study relative to the degree requirements: First cycle, has at least 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements.

Aim

The course aims to give the student theoretical knowledge in environmental psychology, stressing the individual dimension of human – environment interactions. Moreover it seeks to provide an understanding of environmental psychology perspectives on design and use of in indoor and outdoor environments. The course further aims to support students understanding of, environmental psychology methods and empirical applications.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Understand environmental psychology perspectives on human-environment interaction.

Show knowledge about environmental psychology theory and concepts on different environmental levels from micro environments such as, home ambiences to macro environments such as, the global world.


Have an overview of different methodological approaches and, applications in environmental psychology and their theoretical connection.

 

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

Apply environmental psychology theory and concepts in different environmental contexts.


Be able to use existing methods and tools in environmental psychology.


Integrate environmental psychology findings in relation to practical use.


Retrieve and manage scientific literature within the field.


Show skills in digital communication, collaboration and production with provided tools.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Critically discuss previously published environmental psychology research.

Consciously choose appropriate theories and methods for empirical studies.

Orally and written critically discuss own and peers’ reports on different human-environment issues.

Contents

The course is a blended e-learning, which means that is web-based but also have two occasions in which the students and the teachers meet. The course includes both individual and group work.

The course is composed by four modules. Each module provide an overview of the topic object of study, video lecture, instructions regarding how the student should handle the topic, the suggested literature and links to the related the assignments.

1. Module 1 Introduction to environmental psychology. History, development and main relevant theories and concepts.

2. Module 2 The individual perspective of human – environment interactions.

3. Module 3 Human – environment interactions at diverse environmental scales (room – neighborhood – landscape – global)

4. Module 4 Research design. Putting into practice theories and methods from the field of environmental psychology by investigating a specific human-environment situation.

The courses’ meetings are respectively planned during the first class, to provide the student with the possibility to get familiar with the e-learning tools and with the group they will virtually work together. The second meeting will be hold during the last module of the course with the purpose of supporting the students’ research design for their last individual assignment including empirical work.

Det första mötet sker i samband med kursstarten då studenten får tillfälle att bekanta sig med de olika webbaserade verktygen och med studentgruppen som sedan ska samarbeta över nätet. Det andra mötet är planerat  till den sista delkursen och syftar till att ge studenterna vägledning i forskningsdesignen av den sista enskilda kursuppgiften, vilken består av ett empiriskt arbete

 

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Students’ individual and group contributions will be evaluated. The course includes different topics and related individual and group assignments and one final individual project. The evaluation will be based on participation, web based discussions and written reports regarding different human – environment issues presented throughout the course.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
