Aim

The course provides in-depth understanding of traffic safety fundamentals, based on scientific approach and through Safe System holistic perspective.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• have knowledge about the scale of the traffic safety problem and how risks vary between countries, traffic environments, and transportation modes
• gave understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories describing the nature of traffic accidents
• have solid knowledge of the Safe System principles an understand their practical applications
• have solid knowledge of the ‘traffic safety pillars’
• have knowledge about measures to improve traffic safety for specific accident scenarios, road user types and locations

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to analyze a traffic safety problem based on its exposure-risk-consequences dimensions
• be able to identify situations and locations with deficient traffic safety
• be able to propose measures to improve traffic safety
• be able to write technical reports based on relevant theoretical knowledge
• be able to orally present and discuss the results of own safety investigations

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• possess a system view of traffic safety on different levels, for different road users, and transportation modes
• be able to discuss traffic safety for a location based on its conditions
• be able to critically assess traffic safety investigations, based on the available previous knowledge, quality of the data collected, analysis methods and the strength of the conclusions drawn

Contents

The course includes lectures, class exercises, and a course project:

• Lectures give a solid theoretical base and understanding of the area. They are to be complemented by additional reading provided for each lecture topic. The knowledge is controlled weekly quizzes.
• Exercises are done in class guided by a teacher and are intended to train specific skills necessary for a traffic safety practitioner.
• The course project is done in a small group and provides an opportunity to deepen the knowledge in a specific area. This course project is presented as a written report as well as in an oral presentation. Regular feedback is given by the teachers on the project during the course.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U, 3, 4, 5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment:

Passing grade requires: (i) approved thematic quizzes; (ii) approved exercise reports; (iii) approved project report and its oral presentation; (iv) presence at obligatory classes.

Final grade (Fail, 3, 4, 5) is weighed together based on performance in all course components and activities.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
