Aim

The aim of the course is to expand and deepen the students' understanding of real estate business. The course provides knowledge and skills relevant to the multidimensional real estate business field, including asset management, property management, facility management, and real estate development. Focus is on business and management models, and the perspective of the corporate end-user. A central theme is environmental and social governance (ESG), including corporate social responsibility (CSR) and circular economy. The course also introduces futures studies in the field of real estate.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Understand the special characteristics of real estate and understand how these characteristics affect real estate business.
• Understand the multidimensional and evolving nature of real estate business
• Understand the role of real estate business in climate change and other societal challenges
• Be knowledgeable about tools and techniques for making real estate business more circular, as well as economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to critically evaluate and develop business models in real estate
• Be able to assess the feasibility and sustainability of a corporate real estate project
• Be able to work in a group, self-reflect, and reflect on the work of others
• Be able to present their work in a structured manner, both in writing and orally

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to evaluate the significance of long-term strategic management in real estate business
• Be able to discuss existing megatrends and how they affect the real estate business

Contents

The course addresses current issues within real estate business, focusing on management and business models. Special emphasis is placed on the environmental and societal impact of the field, and the transition towards circularity in the real estate sector.

The course is structured in weekly workshops including both lectures and exercises linked to the course project. Additional tutoring sessions are offered to the students to support the project work.

The course hosts several guest lecturers from the field of real estate business. An essential component of the course is a group project to be presented at a final seminar. The group project includes self- and peer evaluation.
