Aim

The purpose of the course is to give the student skills to choose the most appropriate alternative for any given economic environment through techno-economical analysis of power plants.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to account for the components of the combined cycle plant
• be able to present the calculation procedure in pre-defined exercises in written form
• be able to account for the process of building up his or her own developed calculation program for analysis and optimization of thermal power plants
• be able to account for the calculation procedures behind the available commercial heat and mass balance program.
• be able to account for the system parameters which has impact on the efficiency as well as the economy of the combined cycle both written and orally

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to analyse and propose appropriate realistic configuration for combined cycle plants with any given conditions
• be able to form his or her own program for sensitivity analysis and technical and economical optimization of combined cycle plants
• be able to use the available commercial program for optimization of combined cycle plants

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to actively participate in discussions regarding the relevant problems within the field of thermal power engineering
• be able to present analysis of combined cycles in speech as well as in written form

Contents

Each student must carry out a pre-projecting of a combined cycle plant during the first part of the course. In the beginning of the course the students develop their own heat and mass balance program, using Matlab. The commercial heat and mass balance program, IPSEpro, will be introduced in parallel. Using this program the students will be able to validate the results of their pre-projecting assignment. At the same time the commercial program allows the students to carry out more advanced calculations of combined cycles in the end of the course.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: The examination is carried out individually and in group. The compulsory project assignments have to be presented written as well as orally in seminars, where all group members are required to participate actively. To pass the course, the student must pass all of the compulsory tasks. To receive the higher grades (4) and (5) the student must pass the written exam.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

• MVKN60 Theory of Turbo Machinery or MVKN75 Steam and Gas Turbine Engineering
• FMFF05 Thermodynamics with Applications or MMVF01 Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics or VVRF10 Fluid Mechanics

Reading list

• The major part of the acquired literature will be handed out during the course. In addition to this some reference literature will be available in the lecture rooms and the students are encouraged to use these when writing the final project report.
