The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the neutron as a tool for science and engineering. Emphasis will be placed upon the generation of neutron beams, the basics of advanced (state-of-the-art) neutron detectors, modern fission reactors, and methods for shielding and radiation protection. Special emphasis will be placed upon techniques and applications that relate to the European Spallation Source (ESS).

The course is focused on the neutron. It begins by providing a broad overview of the fundamentals of neutron-related applications and ends with a focus on certain ESS-related experimental techniques and instrumentation. The neutron-related applications portion of the course consists of lectures, laboratories, and a "flipped-classrom" tutorial exercise. The ESS-related portion of the course consists of lectures. The student will individually complete a paper or project on a course-related topic and present their work.
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: To pass the course, the student must have satisfactorily completed the laboratory exercises, a "flipped-classroom" tutorial, and a paper or project. In addition, the student must have actively participated in the lectures and tutorials. The final grade will be determined from the grades obtained in the laboratory exercises, tutorials and paper or project, including presentation.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
Assumed prior knowledge: FAFF10 Atomic and Nuclear Physics with Applications.
