Aim

The aim is to deepen the knowledge about the fundamental issues, processes and methods relating to urban planning. Another aim is to develop the students' urban design skills and their understanding of the influence of the urban environment on people's well-being. Moreover the course aims to mediate knowledge of the Swedish Plan and Building Law and how it relates to planning and building as well as the content and importance detailed plans.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• show knowledge about the importance of urban design to achieve long-term sustainable urban environments.
• be able to relate different levels of scale to one another, and perceive how different means of planning affect one another.
• interpret formal plans and their effects on formal permission to erect buildings and similar preconditions.
• have gained insight into the importance of the physical environment for people's well-being.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• demonstrate the ability to analyse urban space and urban contexts
• by reference to existing formal plans for a given site assess preconditions for building on it.
• demonstrate the ability in a group to design and visualize proposals for the alteration of urban environments based on mutually formulated criteria for long-term sustainable urban design.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to take account of the interplay between people and their physical surroundings.
• be able to take into account relevant societal aspects in ones reasoning with regard to urban planning and design
• demonstrate a critical, independent and creative approach regarding the possibilities of urban design and planning for creating long-term sustainable urban environments and contexts.

Contents

The course provides the students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and methods for the analysis of urban space as well as training their ability to reflection regarding urban environments and structures. The students are also given basic knowledge about the aims, levels and application of the Swedish planning legislation. The tuition is carried out in the form of lectures, study visits, design assignments and oral presentations. The following elements are included:

• Analysis of different built-up environments
• Links between detailed and more general levels of planning
• Development of a programme for a smaller urban area
• Develop an urban design proposal for a smaller urban area

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U, 3, 4, 5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment:

Accepted exercises, active participation in study visits and group discussions and at least 80% attendance at lectures.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
