Aim

This course provides students with an understanding of how organisations and in particular businesses are organised, managed and strategically developed. The course introduces tools for understanding and analysis of corporate strategy and investment. The course also discusses the corporate responsibility, stakeholder interactions and the role of businesses in relation to sustainable development.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

•Demonstrate the ability to explain and describe how and why business organisations work.
•Demonstrate the understanding of value creation.
•Be able to identify and describe the business stakeholders and the drivers and constraints for organisational change.
•Describe the dominant schools of thought on corporate strategy.
•Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on the concept of Corporate Responsibility.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

•Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute course assignments within given time limits, using relevant methods for completing the assignment.
•Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and plan and execute a group project within a given time frame.
•Demonstrate the ability to conduct a content analysis.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

•Demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for their on-going learning.
•Demonstrate the capability to reflect on how their own ways of thinking are based on certain values which are affected by, and impact upon, others and the world around them.

Contents

This course provides students with an understanding of how organisations and in particular businesses are organised, managed and strategically developed. The course introduces tools for understanding and analysis of corporate strategy and investment. The course also discusses the corporate responsibility, stakeholder interactions and the role of businesses in relation to sustainable development.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: To pass the course the student must complete a number of smaller course assignments and a group course project. Absence from compulsory activities will be compensated by an assignment according to the instruction of the teacher in charge. The course grade is based on the written examination (75%) and the group course project (25%). While attendance is not mandatory to all in-class session, attending them is central to the achievement of learning outcomes. It is important to note that all elements covered in the classes will not necessarily be mirrored in the course readings and that the examination may reflect all course elements, also those only covered in class.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
