Aim

The course aims to introduce students to their future professional practice. The main focus is on different aspects of the design profession. Invited designers and design educators participate as guest lecturers. They present their work and exchange thoughts and reflections with the students.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Be aware of the various roles the profession of industrial design has to offer.
• Be familiar with the relations of the profession with related fields of work.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to formulate personal views on the design field in general, and industrial design in particular.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to reflect on the future professional role as industrial designer.
• Reflect the cultural mission and ethical responsibility of the designer.

Contents

The course consists mainly of guest lectures. These are followed by discussions with the students on topics of current issues in the design field in general, and industrial design in particular, e.g., education, professional work and roles, norms and values, the future.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U, G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment:

80% attendance at the guest lectures, submitted documentation of personal and group reflections, and a presentation of these at the final seminar.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
