Aim

The goal of the course is to provide students with an introduction to computational programming.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• Demonstrate an understanding of the computer's usefulness as a computational tool.
• Be able to use common methods in existing programming libraries to load, filter, and visualize data, perform calculations for linear algebra, polynomial functions, integrals, optimization, and differential equations.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Use Python and Numpy for simple simulations and technical calculations.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Assess whether the results of calculations are reasonable, for example, using visualization.

Contents

• Introduction to computational programming.
• Use of existing libraries such as numpy, matplotlib, and scipy.
• How data can be imported, filtered, and visualized.
• Matrix computations, polynomial functions, integrals, optimization, and solving differential equations.
• A brief overview of applications, e.g., in image processing and machine learning.
• Python 3 is used as the programming language.
