Aim

Computer science and engineering is a broad field where many techniques and tools are used. The purpose of the course is for students to encounter some of these, especially those that are useful during their continued studies.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• understand basic computer usage, including working with the terminal and navigating the file system
• have a fundamental knowledge of version control systems and their purpose
• be able to use typesetting tools to document and present code and technical information
• have a basic understanding of how source code is translated into machine code and executed by the computer

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to use the Linux terminal to navigate the file system, manage files, and execute programs
• be able to write and format technical documents using LaTeX
• be able to use Git for basic version control and work with software repositories to collaborate in software projects

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of different software development tools and assess their usefulness
• have an understanding of the importance of version control and be able to reason about its role in collaboration and code history

Contents

The Linux terminal, typesetting with LaTeX, introduction to version management with Git, machine code programming.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U, G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: To qualify for a passing grade, the students must have completed the compulsory laboratory exercises.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
