Aim

The study course is intended to give knowledge in the energy markets structure, regulations and functions for electricity, heating and fuels, related to the energy balance and development of energy demand.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to describe various aspects of energy markets' structure, regulations and functions
• be able to relate contemporary development of energy markets to the historic development of society
• be able to formulate a reasonably coherent personal description of important problems and concepts related to energy markets
• be able to relate/compare the Nordic with a global energy market

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to independently carry out a practical analysis of energy supply planning at local or regional levels and be able to defend chosen solutions
• be able to critically examine engineering/academic reports on energy supply systems

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to actively participate in discussions on various energy supply system themes
• be able to independently carry out analyses and arguments for relevant system solutions

Contents

The study course will give knowledge about energy systems to energy demand development. Analysis of resource management, environmental, financial, etc, aspects. Capacity adjustment and system security. Delivery and its quality. Development of electricity and natural gas markets. Electricity and Natural Gas Act. Regulation and supervision of natural monopolies in electricity and gas networks. Energy prices - tariffs, fees and taxes. District heating and cooling - fundamentals and the Swedish market. District heating and cooling in international markets. Markets for car fuels and other fuels. Conditions of future development in energy markets. Differnces between the Nordic and the global energy market.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Both individual examination and examination based upon group performance. Compulsory assignments are presented and discussed in group seminars. Participation in compulsory excercises and compusory seminars are obligatory as well as 3 tests based on the course literature. Approved exercises, tests and seminars are sufficient for final grade 3 "pass". For higher grades a written examination is required.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Assumed prior knowledge: Course in sustainable development, for example MVKF01 Energy and the Environment in Sustainable Development or equivalent.
