Valid for: 2021/22
Faculty: Faculty of Engineering, LTH
Decided by: PLED ID
Date of Decision: 2021-04-22
Main field: Industrial Design.
Compulsory for: MID2
Language of instruction: The course will be given in English
The Master Programme is structured in three focus areas; Form
& Technology, Living & Behaviour and Man & Nature.
The aim of the course is to execute an industrial design project,
if possible in a small team, based on a design brief relevant to
the focus area. The brief will facilitate a profound understanding
of the topic and will reflect research findings relevant to the
subject. The students will during the project develop their
analytical, critical and communicative skills as well as aesthetic
skills and individual means of expression. Students will have the
possibility to collaborate with other faculties at Lund University
and/or external partners.
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
• Demonstrate a profound understanding of the terminology and emergent developments as well as active participation in the contemporary discourse within the chosen subject – in relation to the industrial design discipline.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
• Demonstrate the ability to write a briefing on a professional level, set up a project plan and monitor progress; effectively conducting a complete design process from concept generation to final presentation, adjusting the project’s path if necessary.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
• Demonstrate the ability to conduct advanced research, evaluate and reflect the findings within the framework of the chosen subject, effectively summarising and discussing the results.
• Reflect the cultural mission, the ethical responsibility of the designer and a sustainable development of society.
Based on the knowledge and experience gained in the Industrial Design Project II, students master their chosen topic theoretically and practically.
Students are required to develop an advanced design strategy to
realise a concept (product, service or method) within the framework
set by their chosen topic; delineated with a complementary research
paper or substantial essay.
The outcome, whether as physical 3D prototype and/or 3D simulation
or immaterial, must be presented orally, visually and in writing
– also debating the process employed, issues encountered and
questions raised. In addition, students must demonstrate critical
reflection on the current discourse.
1. Form & Technology specific
• Development of conceptual products and processes for digital
fabrication with traditional and advanced materials and their
practical implementation.
• Experimentation with the aesthetic and functional
opportunities, also in relation to digital mass one-off fabrication
and new modes of entrepreneurship.
2. Living & Behaviour specific
• Development of strategies and concepts for products and
services.
• Experimentation with approaches relating to societal
developments and novel brand strategies, as well as their
implementation.
3. Man & Nature specific
• Development of strategies and/or policies for changing the
designing of products and services on a systemic level.
• Experimentation with novel approaches for sustainable
development strategies and their practical implementation.
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: 80% participation, project completion according to the guidelines set by the teacher.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
