Aim

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Have basic knowledge of design history, particularly history of industrial design, and have knowledge of its stylistic and fashion related connections to visual culture in general. Be able to discuss design history both orally and in writing.

Be familiar with design as an expression of technical and industrial development, and have knowledge of the history of the professional role of the designer.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

Be familiar with basic methods of studying design history.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to relate design history to various social and cultural contexts; power, gender and ethnicity are to the student obvious and fundamental aspects in the study of design history.

Contents

1. Structure

Instruction consists of lessons and seminars were the students also are given possibilities to discus their own ongoing projects in a critical context.

2. Content

The course presents an outline and a problematisation of Western design history. A multitude of different types of designed objects are studied. They are discussed in relation to the cultural context in which they were made, in relation to the history of art, in relation to individual designers. Design is also related to conditions of power, ethnicity and pluralism. Matters of experiencing, describing, analysing, and interpreting design are essential.

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Teaching methods: Instruction consists of lectures and seminars. Examination: Examination consists of one take-home-exam. Re-examination are offered in January and August.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
