Contents

The course covers some of the current research areas in manufacturing at the department. This includes methods for industrial heating in manufacturing systems, with a special focus on induction heating. The control of the induction process is investigated, as well as the technical system and the possible materials involved. Different heating processes are analyzed, e.g. heat treatment of metals and consolidation of composites. The second part of the course covers tribology and surface integrity in manufacturing processes with a special focus on forming operations.

The course comprises the following topics:

Industrial heating in general; technologies, applications, employment.

Induction heating: Basic principles and functionality

Induction heating: system and components

Induction heating: design and dimensioning

Induction heating: applications and work materials

Numerical simulation of induction heating processes.

Temperature measurement technologies: IR, thermocouples, resistive sensors etc.

Tribology in manufacturing processes.

Instruments and methods to measure friction.

Friction models and forming analysis.

Surface topography assessment technologies. The Alicona Infinite focus instrument, optical microscopy.

Surface and subsurface hardness assessment technologies. The Microhardness tester, Nano indenter.

Simulation of induction heating will enhance the general understanding of the technology, as well as highlighting important phenomena and adaption to different processes. Laborations related to tribology and surface integrity will comprise measurement of friction in the LU Tribo tester, assessment and 3D analysis of surfaces using the Alicona instrument, analysis of a workpiece subsurface layer with microscopy and hardness testers.
