Aim

The Master Programme is structured in three focus areas; Form & Technology, Living & Behaviour and Man & Nature.

The aim of the course is to execute an industrial design project, if possible in a small team, based on a design brief relevant to the focus area. During the project, the students put into practice past and newly acquired practical and theoretical knowledge. Furthermore, they develop their analytical, critical and communicative skills as well as aesthetic skills and individual means of expression. Students will have the possibility to collaborate with other faculties at Lund University and/or external partners.



Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

- Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the terminology and familiarity with emergent developments within the chosen subject – in relation to the industrial design discipline.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Demonstrate the ability to write a briefing on a higher level, set up a project plan and monitor progress; effectively conducting a complete design process from concept generation to final presentation, adjusting the project’s path if necessary.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Demonstrate the ability to conduct in-depth research and reflect the findings within the framework of the chosen subject, effectively summarising and discussing the results.

• Reflect the cultural mission, the ethical responsibility of the designer and a sustainable development of society.

Contents

- Based on the knowledge and experience gained in the Industrial Design Project I, students progress in applying themselves theoretically and practically to their chosen topic.

- Students are required to develop an in-depth design strategy to realise a concept (product or service) within the framework set by their chosen topic; delineated with a complementary analytical paper.

- 1. Form & Technology specific

o Investigations into emerging technologies and their relevance for designing.

o Analysis of the aesthetic, performative and economic potential of novel processes in connection to digital fabrication.

- 2. Living & Behaviour specific

o Investigations into the socio-economic interdependencies in diverse markets.

o Analysis of the cultural aspects of design and development of corresponding scenarios and actions.

- 3. Man & Nature specific

o Investigations into the systemic factors that are shaping the human enterprise.

o Analysis and discussion of the obstacles and possible inroads for change.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: 80% participation, project completion according to the guidelines set by the teacher. The outcome, whether as physical 3D prototype and/or 3D simulation or immaterial, must be presented orally, visually and in writing – also debating the process employed and issues encountered.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
