Aim

The aim of the course is to introduce the students to their future profession. The main focus areas are different aspects of the designer profession. Leading designers, artists, researchers, cultural celebrities etc. appear as guest lecturers, presenting their work and exchanging thoughts and reflections with the students.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

- Be aware of the various roles the profession of industrial designer has to offer. Be familiar with the relations of the profession with kindred fields of work.

- Be able to distinguish between the different roles existing in the field of design.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

-  Be able to formulate and stand by their views on design in general and industrial design in particular orally and in writing.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Be able to reflect on and question her/his own future professional role as industrial designer.

• Be able to formulate their personal vision regarding the future professional practice.

• Reflect the cultural mission, the ethical responsibility of the designer and a sustainable development of society.

Contents

Teaching:
The course consists mainly of  guest lectures, possible field trips and workshops. The lectures are followed by discussions with the students on topics of current issues in the field of design in general and industrial design in particular, e.g. education, professional work, professional roles, the future etc.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: 80 % attendance, group work, individual written essay and final seminar.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
