Aim

The course is designed for students at the Faculty of Engineering. English for Engineers has as its objective to give a widened knowledge of the English language.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• understand and be able to apply the kind of vocabulary that is prevalent in the field of engineering.
• understand the structure of an oral presentation and be able to prepare one successfully.
• understand the structure of various types of written texts and be able to prepare examples of them.
• be able to recognise the distinction between spoken and written language and understand the importance of choosing a style of language suitable to the occasion.
• be able to distinguish between academic, formal and informal language.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to execute an oral presentation in English of material with which the student is acquainted.
• be able to write an academic essay or an occupational text in language suitable to the task.
• be able to adapt a text to a specific audience/readership.

Contents

The course studies technical texts in English in order to increase the vocabulary of the students in the field of engineering The course also deals with methods of oral presentation and with different types of written documentation, such as report writing and academic writing. These skills are developed in practical group exercises.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Examinations can take the following forms: oral and/or written examinations at the end of the sub-course, and curriculum-based continuous assessment in the form of home assignments, essays and contributions to seminars. Teaching consists of practical exercises, lectures and seminars.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Admission requirements:

• Upper secondary education or an equivalent thereof is required for admittance
