The aim of the course is to give an introduction to mechanics of materials with application to simple types of structures that are common in buildings and infrastructure.
The course is intended as basic general knowledge for a BSc in Civil Engineering and to give necessary prerequisites for further studies in geotechnical engineering and structural mechanics.

The course starts with a discussion of the concepts of force, moment, free-body diagrams and equilibrium, with application to trusses, and introduction of the concepts stress and strain.
After that follows a deeper treatment of the concepts through work with statically determinate beams.
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: One hand-in assignment and written examination.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
