Aim
- to introduce life science processes such production of food and
drug and show examples of research in these areas
- to lay the foundation for engineering computations
- to visualize life science production systems through
simulation
- to introduce life science processes by group based
learning
- to introduce environmental, ethical and sustainable aspects in
life science production and ethics coupled to student work
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- know the theoretical framework for mass and energy
balances
- be able to describe processes and basic unit opperations in
life science
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to draw simple flow schemes for industrial production
of drug and food
- have a basic knowledge and skills for computational methods to
be able to compute mass and energy balances industrial
processing
- be able to calculate mass flows and energy requirements for
simple life science production systemskn
- be able to participate in teamwork and present the resluts in
joint a report and individually present the results at an oral
presentation
- be abel to individeuall in a littrature report describe a unit
operation
- be able to judge and discuss environmental, ethical and
sustainable aspects in production
- be able to find information about production of drug and food
in textbooks and scientific papers
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to discuss and formulate questions about environmental,
ethical and sustainable aspects for production of life science
products
- Be able to discuss ethical issues related to the project and
group dynamics
Contents
- Flow charts for the life science processes
- Mass och energi balances for the production of food and
drugs
- Project: introduction to the principles for the manufacture of
food and drugs, study visit, literature studies, knowledge and
aspects of the environmental impact of different production
technologies, ethical aspects, aspects of sustainable production;
and training in team work, report writing and oral
presentation
Examination details
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Written exam TH scale (75% of the score at part 1 of the exame for grade 3, the higher grades are a combination of part 1 and 2), assignments MATLAB,active participation in the project, individuall oral presentation of the project and project report containing a group part and an individuell part (gives extra credits for the exam), .Handed in ethics assignment and active participation in ethic case
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
