The course should give advanced knowledge in solid state structural chemistry and materials chemistry including relevant methods of characterisation and synthesis. The course should also deepen the knowledge of the relationship between atomic structure and the chemical and physical properties of a material.

The course covers the main areas; symmetry and atomic structure in inorganic materials, methods for the characterisation of solid materials, synthesis of crystalline materials, the relationship between atomic structure and physical properties. The course also covers defects in crystalline materials.
Exercises: Symmetry and crystal structures together with problem solving.
Project assignment: Studies of solid materials. The project work is presented as a written report and an oral presentation.

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Written final exam (gives the grade). Passed project including written and oral presentation.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
Required prior knowledge: KOOA15 General Chemistry, KASA10 Inorganic Chemistry and KASF05 Materials- and Polymer Technology or KOKA30 General, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and KASF10 Functional Materials.
