Aim
- Familiarise the students with each other, the staff and the
facilities as well as the specific possibilities of studying in a
full-faculty university environment.
- Introduce the three general topics of study: 1. Form
& Technology, 2. Living & Behaviour and 3.
Man & Nature.
- Raise awareness for the relation between the three topics of
study and their importance in industrial design.
- Develop an understanding that sustainable as well as moral
and ethical considerations must be at the root of any industrial
design project.

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- Demonstrate an understanding of the three general topics in
relation to the industrial design profession.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and work individually as well
as in a small team.
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
• Be able to reflect on and question their future professional
roles as industrial designers.
• Reflect the cultural mission, the ethical responsibility of
the designer and a sustainable development of society.
Contents
- The course begins with a repetition of design methodology,
which provides an overview of the methods and processes used to
structure, analyse, synthesize, evaluate and document design
processes.
It is followed by a workshop concerning form, alternatives,
variants and their evaluation and documentation.
- The three general topics will be introduced in form of a
number of small projects and/or workshops.
- Students are required to develop a product, service or write a
topical essay.
Examination details
Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: 80% participation, project completion according to the guidelines set by the teacher.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
