## Aim

Quantum Mechanics is basic for all modern physics. This course gives a deeper understanding that all physicists need both experimentalists and theoreticians. Both theory and applications are treated in the course. Applications are choosen in close relations to other courses.

For a passing grade the student must

• know formalism and mathematical methods
• know how to apply the theory on real problems.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• know how to use the methods of Q M to analyse and make calculations on relevant physical problems
• know methods to determine if a Q M or classical treatment is needed
• be able to discuss and communicate Q M problems.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• realize the importance of quantum mechanics in some applications.

## Contents

Matrix representation. Dirac formalism. Hamiltonian for a particle in an electromagnetic field. Operator formalism for the harmonic oscillator. Landau levels and phonon states. Second order perturbation theory. Time-dependent perturbation theory and Fermi’s golden rule. General theory of angular momenta and spin. Addition of angular momenta.. The Stark and Zeeman effects. The Stern-Gerlach experiment. Elementary theory for quantization of the electromagnetic field - transitions and selection rules. The nuclear single-particle potential, the Nilsson model.

## Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Written exam with both problems and theory. Project work.
