Contents

The course starts by looking at how we communicate face-to-face; how we transmit our message, how we communicate multimodally (language, gesture and gaze direction), how we create understanding, how we deal with expectations, and how we prevent misunderstandings. The objective of this introduction is to raise the awareness about the richness of face-to-face communication that serves as a comparison basis when we look at technical systems. Form: Lectures, exercises, labs, self-study.

The course continues with a focus on specific types of technically supported communication. In this moment we explore the following questions: What are the particular possibilities and limitations of each technical communication system, when compared to face-to-face communication? How do we compensate for the social aspects of communication (politeness, humour, irony etc)? How do we compensate for the lack of visual communication (gaze direction, posture)? How do we compensate for the lack of voice information (intonation, laughter, undertones)? How do we compensate for the lack of gestural information?

Form: Lectures, exercises, hands-on, analyses, labs, group discussions, self-study.
