Aim

The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge in the foundations of sound and its effect on human, applied to problems with noise in buildings and environment.

Contents

The course treats the physical and mathematical foundations of acoustics and introduces fundamental concepts as sound pressure, frequency, sound level, impedance and vibrations. Wave propagation, including phenomena like reflection, transmission, standing waves and resonance is introduced.

Propagation of plane, cylindrical and sperical waves and their effects are discussed, as well as diffraction occurring at obstacles. All phenomena are exemplified by a description of how they influence the noise problems that we encounter in buildings and in our society.

An important part of the course is a project assignment which is presented in a report which is given a grade. Three alternative assignments are available:

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Written exam, project task that is presented orally and written, and written laboration reports. The course is graded according to the result on the project task and the written exam.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Required prior knowledge: FMAA05 Calculus on One Dimension AND FMA430 Calculus in Several Dimensions OR FMAB30 Calculus in Several Dimensions.
