Steam and Gas Turbine Engineering
MVKN75, 7,5 credits, A (Second Cycle)
Valid for: 2018/19
Decided by: PLED M
Date of Decision: 2018-03-27
General Information
Elective for: M4-en
Language of instruction: The course will be given in English on demand
Aim
The course will provide the basic understanding of the
construction and functioning of the components in a simple gas
turbine and steam turbines. The focus will be on the gas turbines.
Further more the course will provide basic skills in problem
solving concerning energy balances at component and system level,
the flow around the blades and vanes, simplified combustion
analysis and calculation of efficiencies and losses.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to describe the different components of the gas turbine
cycle, i.e. the compressor, combustion chamber and expanders, and
their way of functioning and design at a general level
- be able to describe functioning way of different types of
turbines and their design at a general level
- be able to account for the flow phenomenon around the blades
and energy exchange between the working fluid and the blade
channels at a detailed level in written form
- be able to account for which operation and design parameters
that influence the choice of the type of machine and their
performance in written form as well as orally
- be able to calculate and account for component and system
performance for any given system layout in written form
- be able to account for the process of designing the components
of the gas turbine in written form at a general level
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to use the concept of efficiency to analyse and compare
different component design and system solutions
- be able to calculate the stage performance based on the
velocity triangles and energy balances, as well as the component
design for any given design criteria
- be able to calculate the air flow and exhaust gas analysis for
complete combustion of a given hydro carbon fuel and calculate the
enthalpy of the exhaust gases
Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must
- be able to actively participate in discussions regarding the
relevant problems within the field of thermal power
engineering
- be able to present analysis of calculation results from
component and system analysis in written form
Contents
Analysis of the gas turbine cycles’ design and performance
The concept of losses and efficiency
Detailed component studies on compressors, combustion chambers,
and expanders.
Methods for design, off-design calculation and performance
analysis.
Examination details
Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: The examination is carried out individually and in group. The compulsory project assignments have to be presented written as well as orally in seminars, where all group members are required to participate actively. To pass the course, the student must pass all of the compulsory tasks.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
Admission
Admission requirements:
