Aim

The course provides the students with understanding and knowledge regarding the components as well as the overall view of the concept "Smart industry (smart manufacturing, industrie 4.0, connceted industry, etc)". The course focuses on automation systems for production and manufacturing (control system architecture, communication, and information handling) and gives, through guest lectures and projects, an understanding of trends, international standards and current issues and challenges for Swedish industry.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to define and explain basic concepts in manufacturing automation
• be able to define and explain basic concepts realted to "smart industry"
• be able to derive basic properties of a production line from the properties of the individual units, and be able to characterise how the units influence the overall plant-wide behaviour
• be aware of new industrial concepts and related terminology
• be able to distinguish between physical and functional enterprise models
• be familiar with important national and international industrial standards for automation systems, integration and interoperability.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to, independently, interpret technical specifications on a production system and be able to recognize common constraints, based on an understanding for how the automation system will be used and how it will interact with its environment
• be able to draw conclusions from numerical calculations about the plausibility of models and specifications
• be able to analyze production characteristics through the use of various methods.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• understand relations and limitations when simplified models are used to describe a complex dynamic production system
• show the ability for team work and cooperation in projects and project presentations
• show the ability to perform individual work and present orally.

Contents

Terminology related to Smart industry. Functional enterprise models. Physical enterprise models. Operation management. RAMI 4.0 and NIST model. Key performance indicators for manufacturing operations. Software systems for automation. International industry standards (e.g. IEC 62264, IEC 61512, and ISO 22400). Referencematerial related to Industrie 4.0.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: Written exam and two projects.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
