Aim

The overall objectives of the course are to provide students with an increased knowledge of environmental issues and methods in an international perspective, and to help students acquire a critical and scientific work mode.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to complete a largely self-governed project, thereby showing that he/she:

• Can identify and define a relevant and manageable problem within the area of environmental science,
• Can carry out an analysis with a satisfying depth, using several perspectives/disciplines.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• Present his/her work in the form of a scientific article or report according to current scientific standards; and present it orally.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• Show ability to formulate, discuss, and respond to constructive criticism within the framework of the writing process.

Contents

The course work consists mainly of the students carrying out project work within a general theme that may vary from year to year. The project should be presented as a paper

The course comprises (i) a number of seminars where students are required to evaluate and discuss each other's projects and deliver constructive criticism, and (ii) class lectures. Lectures focus on the process of scientific research and how to communicate research through scientific writing as well as on the theme(s) selected for the course. Each project is tutored individually.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: The students will be required to hand in a number of preliminary versions of their project paper, and these will be discussed during several seminars. For the paper to be graded, the course director should have been able to follow the working process. Active participation in the seminars is required, and students must contribute by delivering comments on other papers. The examination consists of a final project paper, which is to be defended at a final seminar. In addition to defending his/her own paper, each student should also act as opponent for another student’s paper. The project is carried out alone or in groups of two.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Admission requirements:

• Minimum 6 higher education credits from interdisciplinary studies in environmental science
• FMI031 Environmental Science, Especially Environmental Chemistry or FMI040 Energy Systems Analysis: Renewable Sources of Energy or FMI050 Energy Systems Analysis: Energy, Environment and Natural Resources or FMIF01 Environmental System Studies: Management for Sustainable Development or FMIF05 Environmental Management or FMIF10 Environmental Systems Studies and Sustainable Development or FMIF20 Environmental Issues or FMIF50 Environmental Science, Especially Environmental Chemistry or FMIN20 Energy Systems Analysis: Renewable Sources of Energy or FMIN25 Energy Systems Analysis: Energy, Environment and Natural Resources or VTVA05 Sustainable Construction

Required prior knowledge: Minimum 130 higher education credits within the program. Good command of English.

• The fixed course literature is limited; instead each student should search knowledge, mainly through scientific literature and articles, in line with the common theme and his/her objectives within this theme.
