Aim

The aim with the course is to get elementary knowledge in modern Mandarin. The course is beneficial for further studies in China or a future professional career in which contacts with China could constitute a part of the work routine.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

show elementary knowledge about basic features in the syntax, pronunciation, and character system of Mandarin

be able to give a broad outline of the Chinese character system

be able to identify central phonetic phenomena in Mandarin Chinese

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

· show ability to use central grammatical constructions in Mandarin in both speech and writing

· be able to understand and be understood during basic everyday conversations in Mandarin

· be able to identify and write approx. 300 characters

Contents

The course studies Mandarin phonetics, phonology, basic grammar, and character system through reading of simpler texts. The students practice in listening comprehension, written and oral presentation. The course is based on lectures and group exercises.

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Written and oral examination.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
