Aim

• to get knowledge about the Chinese society in a cultural and historical perspective as a preparation for further studies in the Chinese language as well as visiting a Chinese university. It can also be beneficial for a future professional career in which contacts with China could constitute a part of the work routine.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• have knowledge about Chinese geography and cultural geography as well as economy and society based on Chinas history,
• have understanding for the conditions for Swedish companies to do business with and in China,
• have basic knowledge about the Chinese language history, structure and pronunciation.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to in both speech and writing present and discuss present Chinese society issues

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• have the ability to make judgements in a limited problem regarding China with regard to relevant society and ethical aspects.

Contents

The course is based on seminars that cover Chinas climate, geography, population and language, Chinas ancient and modern history, the Chinese language, Chinas religion and philosophy, the modern Chinese society, and Swedish business in China with examples from the telecom and engineering industry.

Examination details

Grading scale: UG - (U,G) - (Fail, Pass)
Assessment: Compulsory attendance at the seminars (80%). Written and oral presentation of assignments.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.

Admission

The number of participants is limited to: 40
Selection: Admission guaranteed for students admitted to the China programme. Selection rules for the remaining places: Credits remaining for the degree.
