The course addresses the development of the history of architecture by focusing on examples of its generally acknowledged masterpieces. They are considered initially with regard to their form, style and techniques; their material and contributions to them by artisans are studied by considering their various details. The maintenance and renewal of the stock of buildings is considered, as well as the technical principles applied in modern maintenance and restoration. The focus of the course on architectural history, building materials and construction will be applied in an assignement which will be performed as a group work.

The weight of emphasis of the course lies on the development of Western architecture, and the manner of building in southern Sweden and Denmark. The course considers buildings of a public character, those exhibiting the work of well-known leading architects and also popular buildings.

The development of building technology and its influence on architectural form is given particular attention.

Conservation is presented by considering the heritage of buildings and its preservation and renewal. The basics of making cultural-historical evaluations are studied, together with the particular techniques used in older buildings. Principles for restoration and renewal are studied through scrutinizing examples.

A planned excursion to one or more interesting architectural sites is preceded by relevant seminar discussions.

The workplace practical consists of one week study visit in smaller groups which will be followed-up by a seminar.

Any costs for excursions are to be paid by the student.
