Date of Decision: 2018-04-04

General Information

Main field: Architecture. Depth of study relative to the degree requirements: First cycle, has at least 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements.
Elective Compulsory for: A3
Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish

Aim

The course aims to provide students with an advanced knowledge of architecture’s spatial qualities in relation to complex urban contexts and develop their ability to design architecture in specific and socially mixed situations shaped by different historical imprints.  Focus is particularly devoted to the urban dimension, and how its tangible and intangible significances both affect and are affected by the built environment.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

demonstrate advanced knowledge of methods and theories within in the field of architecture with special focus on urban contexts.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

demonstrate skills to, in a project consciously relating to urban contexts, design, plan or renew environments and buildings.

demonstrate the ability to identify and deal with fundamental issues in the areas of architecture and community building.

demonstrate an ability to, with adequate architectural synthesis method, critically, independently and creatively implement design tasks in the course program.

demonstrate the ability to present their architectural project so that it communicates in a professionally acceptable manner.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

demonstrate an ability to assess what kind of background information relevant to their own project.

demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate their own work results during and after the design process.

Contents

The course is project oriented and the main assignment is to design an architectural proposal in relation to a given urban context. Strong emphasis is put on exploring how buildings and places can sustain, develop and renew physical, cultural and social meanings in built environments. The course assignment calls for a critical reading of architecture and encourages a personal and experimental approach where innovative proposals can be tested.

The creative process is theoretically supported by text studies, reference studies and seminars giving in-depth knowledge on how built urban contexts are discussed and evaluated in practice and theory.

Supervision is given on a weekly basis and by specific submissions, presentations and public briefings the student is trained to communicate architecture with drawings, words and images, in a structured and informed way.

Examination details

Active participation in all interim and final briefings. 80% attendance at lectures and seminars. In addition, active participation in the scheduled course activities (at least 80% attendance) as introductions, briefings and seminars. The examination will be both oral and written.
