Aim

The course presents a process-oriented view, and stimulates the creation of effective and efficient material flows in the construction industry. The course also furnishes basic and advanced knowledge regarding handling, transport and system design. Furthermore the course provides skills in identifying problems, analysing material flows and designing logistic systems. The course offers an introduction to logistics terminology and theory.

A project, which is part of the course, is meant to provide skills in identifying and solving problems, and to provide experience in carrying out and presenting a project. It should, furthermore, stimulate the students to exercise independent and critical thinking.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• have knowledge about and an understanding of the material flows and the logistics of the construction industry.

This means that the student has acquired:

 

• basic knowledge in the field of logistics and its impact on the construction industry.
• understanding and basic knowledge of supply chain management, lean and lean construction, distribution, warehousing, route planning, purchasing, total cost analysis, materials management, terminals, distribution services and third party logistics.
• a critical perspective on the supply systems of the construction industry and a holistic perspective on problems and possibilities.
• an understanding of how total cost analysis can analyse the performance of construction supply chains.
• the ability to identify problems in a construction production environment and explain them with support of empirical evidence and theory in order to find solutions.
• improved performance in managing and presenting projects.
• the ability to identify and separate actors in supply chains, and have an understanding of the role of each actor.
• understanding of the role of the customer and its impact on the supply chain.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to express, solve and interpret logistical problems in the construction industry.
• be able to use and understand existing logistics terminology, and clearly express problems, solutions and interpretations of materials supply in a construction environment.
• be able to begin a master’s thesis in the field of construction logistics, and be prepared to meet the challenges of a first assignment with logistics responsibilities in the construction industry.
• be able, orally and in writing, to present and discuss other people’s analyses.
• independently use literature and scientific publications to analyse logistics performance in business environments.
• ability to interpret results and draw relevant conclustions from these.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• independently and critically be able to relate to phenomena and facts in relation to the material flows of the construction industry. The student must also be able to relate to the ethical and environmental perspectives introduced in the course.

Contents

The basics of logistics and its role in the construction industry are addressed in seminars. Different methods and theories regarding materials control and materials supply are dealt with in exercises. The students will carry out an extensive project assignment at a building site, where a logistics problem or a possibility will be identified, and the students should formulate the problem and develop suggestions for solutions through studies and research. The project assignment will be presented at a seminar in the form of a technical report. Study visits to relevant companies in the building industry's supply chains will take place, where company representatives will describe their role and their activities. The course concludes in a written examination that will test and develop the student's understanding and knowledge.

Grading scale: TH - (U,3,4,5) - (Fail, Three, Four, Five)
Assessment: To qualify for a final grade, the student must have satisfactorily completed and presented the compulsory project and passed the written examination. The final grade is a combination of the weighted grades obtained on the project (0,5) and on the written examination (0,5). Compulsory attendance may occur in certain parts.

The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
