Subject of the course are basic aspects of structure and function of neurons, signalling between and within neurons, the structure , evolution and development of nervous systems, and the neural basis of behaviour, memory and cognition.

Assessment: Teaching consists of lectures, tutorials, practicals and a journal club. Practicals, tutorials, the journal club sessions and the course elements associated with these are compulsory. Examination takes the form of oral or written tests during the course. Students who fail the ordinary tests will have an opportunity to take another test in close proximity to the ordinary test. Students who fail the ordinary tests will have an opportunity to take another test in close proximity to the ordinary test.
The examiner, in consultation with Disability Support Services, may deviate from the regular form of examination in order to provide a permanently disabled student with a form of examination equivalent to that of a student without a disability.
