Aim

The student shall within the limits of the course enter deep into the subject of urban water transport and treatment. The student shall learn to dimension and plan the operation of facilities for drinking-water, wastewater and storm-water management in urban areas.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to independently analyse and value parameters influencing the function and efficiency of treatment processes and piping systems.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to choose and dimension processes for wastewater treatment, drinking-water treatment and storm-water handling in urban areas based on given prerequisites.
• be able to use computer models for optimization of treatment processes and/or transport of storm-water.
• be able to give a short oral presentation in English of a given task in front of a larger audience.
• be able to write simpler technical reports in English, possible for persons within the branch to understand.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

• be able to independently collect and compile relevant information for choice and dimensioning of systems for handling wastewater, drinking water and storm-water  in urban areas.

Contents

The course includes essential aspects on the whole urban water system. The course deals with the following areas of knowledge: 

• Survey of water resources, water consumption and water quality
• Treatment processes for potable water.
• Storage and distribution of potable water.
• Urban hydrology.
• Storm-water handling and treatment.
• Computer models on storm-water.
• Municipal and industrial wastewaster systems.
• Physical, chemical and biological treatment processes.
• Computer models on activated-sludge processes.
• Sludge treatment.
• Re-use of wastewater and storm-water.

Examination details

Grading scale: TH
Assessment: Written examination. Re-examination might be oral. Project assignments, computer exercises and laboration. Reports. Oral and written presentation.
