Aim

The aim with the course is to provide students with the necessary knowlegde and skills required to analyze issues and problems in economics and business administration. The course also provides students with skills necessary for subsequent studies.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to:

• explain and describe fundamental theories and concepts in economics, particularily in microeconomics but also in macroeconomics, especially those dealing with growth theories and business cycle fluctations;
• explain and describe basic theories and concepts in business administration, particularily external financial accounting and financial account analysis.

Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to:

• choose and use appropriate economic models in order to solve given problems and issues of economic nature;
• analyze and describe individual markets and their interplay with other markets, and with legal institutions and the public sector;
• record common business activities in a firm;
• establish and analyze balance sheets and income statements.

Judgement and approach
For a passing grade the student must

Be able to:

• evaluate the usefulness of general economic theories to analyze peoples' choices, individual as well as collective;
• understand the market economic solutions as well as the public solutions to resoure allocation problems in the society, and the problems associated with these solutions;
• understand the role external accounting plays in order to balance different agents' interest in a firm's result; and
• search and evaluate materials for further studies.

Contents

In economics, we study incentives behind and the results of individuals' choices in the society. In microeconomics, we study how the allocation of scarce resources is solved in a market economy under different institutional set-ups. Particular focus is given to the microeconomic tools such as opportunity cost, equilbrium, and the models for consumers' and producers' choices. In macroeconomics, we study how the economy function on a aggregate level. Particular focus is given to long-run economic growth and business cycle fluctations.

In business administration, we study firms' goals, conditions under which they operate, and tools. The main focus is on external accounting and business account analysis.
