Valid for: 2016/17
Decided by: Education Board D
Date of Decision: 2016-04-08
General Information
Main field: Technology.
Elective Compulsory for: V3
Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish
Aim
The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge in the
foundations of sound and its effect on human, applied to problems
with noise in buildings and environment.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a passing grade the student must
- Be able to explain foundational acoustic concepts such as sound
level, frequency, spectrum, noise, vibrations, diffraction,
interferens, absorption and sound insulation.
- Be able to explain how sound is created, spread and recieved by
human, and the effect of sound on health and wellbeing.
- Be able to explain different recomended maximum values and
regulations against noise, and be able to explain different
measures that can be taken to reduce the impact of noise in
enviroment.
- Be able to explain how sound is transmitted and reduced in
buildnings in the cases of direct transmission and flanking
transmissions.
- Be able to explain different types of acoustic measurement
methods – in rooms, between rooms, and in environment.
Competences and skills
For a passing grade the student must
- Be able to use acoustical concepts as well as mathematical and
physical tools to describe, analyse and propose measures that can
be taken to deal with problems related to noise.
- Be able to perform a measurement and calculation of the
reverbation time in a room, as well as propose measures to attain
desired acoustical properties.
- Be able to perform a measurement of the of the sound insulation
in a wall and step sound insulation in a floor according to
standardised model, as well as vibrations in and between structural
elements.
- Be able to perform calculations of reverbation time, sound
insulation and impact sound level for a given room and
building.
- Be able to plan, execute and analyse measurements of sound
levels from traffic noise.
- Be able to perform calculations of sound levels at different
traffic situations using commersial software.
- Be able to interpret and analyse different measurement signals
and frequency spectra.
- Be able to work practically with acoustic measurement
equipment.
- Be able to present a solution to an acostic problem in a
technical report.
Contents
The course treats the physical and mathematical foundations of
acoustics and introduces fundamental concepts as sound pressure,
frequency, sound level, impedance and vibrations. Wave propagation,
including phenomena like reflection, transmission, standing waves
and resonance is introduced.
Propagation of plane, cylindrical and sperical waves and their
effects are discussed, as well as diffraction occurring at
obstacles. All phenomena are exemplified by a description of how
they influence the noise problems that we encounter in buildings
and in our society.
- Noise from traffic: calculations, measurements, measures to be
taken and noice concerns in spatial planning.
- Room acoustics – Sound absorption and different absorbents,
eigenvalue analysis, reverbation time and room acoustic
planing.
- Sound insulation and structure borne sound: reduction number
and -coefficient, Insulation in single and double wall, vibration
insulation of construction elements, impact sound insulation,
flanking transmission, transmission of sound from floor to wall and
continuing. Impact sounds.
Further, two laboratory assignments, two hours each, are included
in the course:
- A presentation of equipment and measurement methods for sound
insulation and sound absorption.
- Measurement of vibrations in beam and string.
An important part of the course is a project assignment which is
presented in a report which is given a grade. Three alternative
assignments are available:
- Measurement and simulation of noise in a traffic
situation.
- Mesurement and calculation of reverberation time.
- Free assignment.
