Virtual Design and Construction – BIM Applications

VBKN20, 7,5 credits, A (Second Cycle)

Valid for: 2016/17
Decided by: Education Board D
Date of Decision: 2016-04-08

General Information

Elective for: V5-hb, V5-bf
Language of instruction: The course will be given in Swedish

Aim

The purpose of the course is for the course participant to attain basic knowledge and understanding of virtual design and construction with respect to 3D-modelling and BIM-applications for analysis, simulations and visualisations of structural design, clash detection, constructability, quantity takeoff’s, cost estimates, time scheduling etc. The course supports an explorative learning process in which the course participants learn how to apply BIM-based design and construction in a realistic context. The software systems used in the course are primarily Revit, Robot, Navisworks and VICO Office, which are commonly applied in industry.

Contents

The course rests upon a realistic building case, i.e. a block of student apartments, in which a building client has assigned the course participants, individually or in groups of two students, to act in the role of BIM-consultants.
The course is designed as an applied course in which the course participants are expected to test and explore the introduced BIM-systems in order to carry out the analysis, simulations and visualisations that are included in the case assignment of the course.
The course includes three separate assignments that deal with relevant BIM-objectives, i.e. 3D-modelling including model verification, visualization, drawings and clash detection; quantity take-off, cost estimates and time scheduling; and finally, model-based structural analysis. Each assignment is reported, individually or in groups of two students, in written reports and supplementary BIM-files. Written feedback for all three assignments is provided all course participants.
The tree assignments of the course is supplemented with a concluding and comprehensive project assignment, which also is carried out individually or in groups of two course participants. The results of the project assignment are reported in a written report and are presented orally at a seminar by the end of the course. Written feedback for the project assignments is provided all course participants.
